Default running without a DPF?!?

My father-in-law drives a 1.6 diesel V50. He called me to say his DPF was knacked and asked me to put him in touch with a local indy Volvo specialist I use. Anyway, I met him yesterday and asked him how much the replacement DPF had cost and he said "Nothing. The garage just disconnected it".

I assumed he was going to run it without the DPF til his next NCT (Irish equivalent of MOT as he lives in RoI) but he said that his garage had just told him to drive without it and it wouldn't be a problem. In fact, he'd probably see better mileage!

Now I'm wondering - how is a vehicle going to pass an emissions test without a DPF? If we could all drive without them, why would we bother fitting them in the first place?

Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm baffled!
