Diesel engines make a very different sound to petrol's and as such are difficult to make them sound sporty. Straight-piping the exhaust for the full length is the only way to make it 'loud' but beware that the sound will be awful and full of turbo whistle, in fact it will sound a lot like an old skip lorry with a short exhaust.
The reason behind the noise (or lack of) is that diesel burns more slowly and progressively rather than petrol which goes 'bang' upon ignition.
