For interest that area is a favourite rot-spot for Volvo 140s. My 144 was one-fastidious owner before me - it has been dripping with Waxoyl all its life yet the MoT-tester knew of this problem and showed me before I told him to repair it.
Unfortunately it seems just about every model and make of car has its design or manufacture weak spots: I'm still wondering what causes the huge rust blister coming on the lower front wing of my 740, identical to that on another I've seen for sale recently. The opposite side to the battery, so not spilled acid.
