Don't worry, it won't be the gearbox itself. Something has likely broken inside the selector assembly.

Options are to source a working replacement from a breaker and swap it over in its entirety, or remove and dismantle the existing unit to determine the cause of the failure. Many of the likely culprit components (e.g. the plastic locking arm) are available from a Volvo dealer. Both are within the capability of a competent weekend mechanic.
