The inner joints aren't 'secured' by anything other than the CV boot so you have to be careful when removing the outter joint from the hub. As your CV boot was already torn there was even less strength in the boot to support it.
I need to replace the same inner boot on my T5, however the joints aren't clicking at all so I will simply be cleaning/regreasing then replacing the boot.
