I had experienced a similar issue with my new S40, and it was initially ascribed it to my habbits of changing gears for 14 years to my other car (400 Volvo). Finally, the new one needed an adjustment as
houghtonc79 says. Now is very sweet. Just ask the dealer to have a look...
