Firs time I heard about it when refilling my aircon, last year.
Tech was teaching his subordinate (hilarious) "how and why AC works"
His story was about "boneheads" abusing AC, setting temperatures too low, catching colds etc and complaining/seeking reimbursement to/from manufacturers.
Yet, today I tried to find some more info, and it proves as tricky task.
Here's one of better ones:
Quote:
Minimum temp is set to 16 for few reason
1st
human comfort is defined by ASHRAE std and too low temp can be a health risk
16 is considered as ideal because lower temps tend to alter rate of human metabolism also some people suffer headache, cold when temp are lowered
This STD can be referred
ASHRAE 55 ADAPTIVE COMFORT under "
Local thermal discomfort "
2nd
Too low temp can damage evaporators coil and to protect them the temp are always set high
3rd
The air conditioner will consume more power as it has to do more work now to bring the temperature from ambient to 14 or 15 C
