I had assumed the Hummer/Humvee had portals...

A portal axle is a normal axle with portal units at each end. These are gearboxes which lower the drive, allowing the centre line of the axle to sit above the centre line of the wheels, massively increasing ground clearance as the diffs tend to be the lowest point.

Google it and the Volvo C303 axles which fetch very strong money second hand and it'll hopefully be clear. Pinzgauers, and I think UNIMOG use them too.
