Whatever you do, don't just splice into the tail lamps as these cars monitor the bulb's current and the CEM (Central Electronics Module) doesn't like extra bulbs.

There are two ways you can do it.
1) Get the Volvo trailer module. It's easy to fit using the connectors already in the boot. You need to get a Volvo specialist to then update the software then your trailer will work properly including the warning light in the dash.

2) Get a 'bypass relay'. These take a signal from your lamps (negligible current so don't upset the CEM) and use it to switch the trailer. You'll need to find 12v in the boot to power the thing and there's no way it can make use of the warning light in the dash. Most of them have a horrible bleeper to get round this. No software changes are required.

The choice is yours. The Volvo module is the most satisfactory, the bypass relay is cheaper.
