Just for balance, my wife also like's MINIs and has an older R53 Cooper S (supercharged model). It costs £330/year tax if I remember correctly. It makes a better noise than the newer ones, but you pay for it in road tax. I've had cars with twice the engine capacity that were cheaper on tax.
