So you know i've got the same car, had the same error and i just had to change the EGR valve, got one for £20 off ebay and it drives fine now.
smell of fumes could also be the breather pipe as mine had a similar thing and when i took the cover off the breather had come lose so was leaking fumes out just needed reseating.
