Good information.
To add to it, I have just replaced the original 2 silencer set up on my MY2000 V70.
I was offered a new but old-stock OEM single silencer system which I fitted. It may or may not be better quality than the current systems they sell which others have warned here do not last.
It is a bit noisier than the original at idle and low speed but not noticeably at speed.
So my conclusion is that Volvo fitted that extra silencer for a good reason, but for me it is not worth more than doubling the cost to replace it.
