The angle gear is a known weak point on the R. Not sure if its applicable to both manual and auto, I would expect the answer is yes??
They can wear and even break, causing a slipping or complete lack of 4 wheel drive. Mine was starting to slip, but I couldn't tell until one of the local Volvo techs, (who tests the police T5's) diagnosed it.
I think they now fit an uprated part if its being replaced (XC90????)
