It wouldn't do you any harm to take a look at a recent thread in S40 /V40 '96-'04 : "variable intermitant wiper mod anyone?" by chug in Derby on 9/11/08, and the replies, including DavidMarron's which suggests an extra wiper Controller by Maplins [K2599 - Intermittent Wiper Controller]which is "ideal...for older cars" - rather than just replacing the relay. It gives intervals of 5, 10 & 15 seconds; I've emailed them suggesting adding (from zero) 1, 2, 3 & 4 seconds to increase the variability and make it suitable for different conditions. Jack Cluer may have been aware of it.
Cheaper than ipd too.
