Default Coding Key Fob

Have seen used fobs on eBay but notice that they mention a specific frequency in the listings. Is this crucial that I get the correct one and if so, how do I find what mine is as there is nothing marked on the one I already have?

Some years ago I bought a spare for a SAAB and the dealer was unable to code it to the car so that was a waste of money (although the dealer didn't charge for the unsuccessful attempt).

My V70 is a 1998 MY so will any 3-button fob be suitable or is it only later VIDA cars that can have new fobs coded to them?

TIA
