Thank you Ruby, I have that type of tap in the kitchen.
The problem is now solved. I bought a chrome on brass Sienna basin mixer tap sold by one of the bathroom wherehouses on the Internet for the princely sum of £17.99.
Now fitted and tested and all good. The replacement tap looks and feels a lot better than the original. Must remember to make a note of its make and model for when it needs a new cartridge, though with cartridges running at up to £10 each it may be easier to change the tap again.
