Well the fan is out... To remove the connector I simply slid it upwards towards the window screen, parallel to to the face of the fan housing if that makes sense. It's like the housing has a T shaped clip which secures the connector - I pushed it backwards and the connector came off.
I tried the fan in the car prior to removal and it had stopped working completely. Once removed I tested the fan by using a DVM and there is no resistance, almost a dead short and placing a 12v supply across the terminals resulted in no movement and just a small spark.
