The photo's further up the guide show the steering wheel and stalks being removed. There is no need to disturb the steering wheel or stalks.

Remove the plastic covers over the stalks and behind the wheel. Then undo the four bolts that attach the column to the body under the dash, this allows the column to drop down and the wheel to rest on the drivers seat. There is plenty of room to remove the dash out of the passenger side door.

When lowering the steering column there is a black single wire attached to a spade connector - this needs to be disconnected as there is not sufficient free play in the wire, hence the need to remove the steering covers.
