The 6 speed is better but these were always econo-car automatics used in Vauxhalls and the like, and were never on a level with the likes of the contemporary ZF HP5 and HP6 transmissions you get in RWD European cars.

You hit the nail on the head there. I have a Merc with the 7G auto gearbox now & the difference is like night & day.
