Hi,
I have a 2008 XC70. From the moment i have purchased the car (6 Months ago) I had problems with my DIM unit/display: self-resetting the average mpg, not able to explore the trip computer options, not responding to READ commands, not cancelling the massages...
I was looking throw the internet and Ii didn’t find anything related but with the help of this thread I was able to narrow the problem.
The problem: the wires, which are connecting the main connector of the stalk with the small electronic board (PCB) which is o the end of the stalk, are getting broken because of the movement in time.
So solution:
-take the stalk out from the car
- open it: you need to pry out the back cover of the stalk
-make a picture with your phone on the both ends where the small wires are soldered on the boards
- check the continuity of the 6 small wires with a multimeter or with a pair of tweezers pull gently from each wire, if they are broken you going to fill that the wire core is coming out from the isolation.
- from an old wired mouse or from an old VGA monitor cable, splint it and take 6 small wire like you have on the stalk
- cut the stalk wires, take them out, solder the new wires on one of the boards (according to the picture which you have taken previously) afterwards pass the wires through the stalk articulation and solder them on the other board (according to the picture which you have taken previously)
- assemble all back, fitted on the car, test it
I hope it is useful for someone like it was useful for me.
Enjoy the car and the money which you have saved, around 75 pounds, a full tank of diesel.
