Iirc Comma are part of the Esso group. Ive used their gear oil a couple of times in two cars and both times the shifts were notchy and crunchy, just my experience of course, lot of cars out there with it in.

Some gearboxes do indeed use engine oil. The mini is a fine example as the gearbox is effectively also the sump!

Its widely accepted and not just a hangover from years past that transmission oil should be changed every 75k.
Someone on another forum talking about the vag boxes said (now I have no idea as to the accuracy of this statement, but it doesnt sound all that far fetched) that in Germany the lifespan of a vehicle is considered to be 5 years, and this is the 'life' for which the boxes are filled to last...
