Not sure what engine you have as around 2010 they change quite a bit and not only did the power increase but I believe there was a significant improvement in economy from my reading of the form posts. I.E. the 185 D5 was quite thirsty but the 205 D5 improved this a fair bit, the 215 then made further improvements. It's also where it went from single turbo to dual.

I have a V70 D5 215 auto and do a fair amount of town driving and normally get somewhere around 30mpg and 40-45 on a long run depending upon what type of road I am on.

Other things I have noticed,
Warm up phase uses a lot more diesel and when it's below about 5C it uses even more.
If you use all the power then I am sure I could get it down to 18mpg or less.

I had a P2 V70 T5 before, now that could use a serious amount of fuel without even trying.
