If the dampness smells and tastes sweet, it is very likely coolant, so the heater valve or matrix is the culprit.

or rain water coming in somewhere. I think a leaking screen is very unlikely, but still possible. The leak will be in the bonding material, the rubber in the pictures is irrelevant. Also check the rubber transit just below the bonnet lock, that is where I found the cause of my damp carpet.

It is water and it happened as the car was laid up for a couple of weeks and often covered in snow and ice. I will check that rubber part, thanks.
