The best mpg I have ever got is also going several hundred miles at 60 mph along French motorways on cruise control, with air con on because it was 30C outside. Reported mpg was 33. Going faster at 80 mph on way home, the mpg dropped to 31. Constant speed and hardly any stops (you have to put your foot down getting back onto the motorway) keeps the mpg high.
The usual mpg pootling around town and on a few longer journeys is 26-27 mpg. In winter it drops to 24-25 mpg because of cold starts.
