When I looked at the brochures, the V40 was under 100g co2 and thus zero road tax, whereas the XC40 was beyond 100g. Also the V40 was quicker and had better fuel economy. They were within 1-20 Kgs of each other.
Why the difference, on what is a brand new engine.

The higher ride height of the XC means more air goes under the car and affects the aerodynamics slightly I guess. When we were designing faired bikes we found it was better to avoid letting air get compressed against the bottom of the fairing and the road. It consumed energy to do that.
