Glow plugs are the most obvious candidate and can be confirmed or eliminated in minutes with a multimeter.

-Engine off and cold.
-Pull the protective caps/power leads from all 5 glow plugs.
-Multimeter set to resistance (if manual ranging, set dial to 200ohms)
-Black multimeter lead on bare engine metal, red lead on the exposed end of each glow plug and take the reading and report back with all 5 resistance figures.
