This is what I thought too, is the auto really that bad or is there something else at play here? Perhaps one man's "mixed urban/rural" is another's "heavy traffic and steep twisty back lanes"...

Whatever the case, I would have expected maybe a 15-20% penalty with an autobox at worst?
