I borrowed a roof box from a kind gentleman here in 2016 as a trial to see if worth the investment. All I can say, after our trip we bought our own box and have used it a lot since, from weekends away to full blown road trip holidays, by which we'll be using ours in France too. Bars you can get second hand cheap enough.
