My Dad had the same scenario as you - he went to the dealer to buy a new T8, but was offered only 3.5k trade in against his one owner, FVSH XC90 R Design. A quick flick through several car sales chipwrappers showed dealers selling them to the public at close on double that, which was a huge mark up.
So he ended up giving it to me. Financially it's a relative loss for his as he doesn't get a bung for the trade in, but more importantly he doesn't feel like the dealer has been able to take advantage.
