I think your car may well be fitted with a steering lock, Kevin. I seem to recall that all four of my 1 series cars were so equipped. Reference to the book of Haynes, which covers cars built from 1966 to 1974, chapter 11, paragraph 22, details replacing the steering wheel lock. It does not say that earlier cars were not so fitted, so I assume that it was standard fitment from introduction.

I am greatly impressed that replacement keys are still available from Volvo as 'grumpydad' indicates. At least they should not cost anything like the amount that I was quoted recently for replacements for my present 2000 V70!

Regards, John.

PS I've a feeling that your car will also have 'quarter' lights. These were never really secure on my cars, and may allow a means of access with minimal damage. The catch was glued to the glass and the bond regularly failed through, I assume, the effects of sunlight.

John.
