The dealer is right the tow bar people have compromised your safety by removing the extremely strong boron steel beam , they have not designed the towbar properly to fit behind it , which is where the volvo tow bar goes , Remember volvo tow bars are crash tested , the non volvo ones are not as far as i know , why not ask them ...

THis does not apply to the new XC90 , with that you do discard the beam , but it is an alloy one not a boron steel one ...
