It is indeed the locking ring that is stopping the half shaft from moving outwards. Although that ring and the bearing inner are a tight fit on the half shaft I am surprised at the lack of 'belt and braces' like circlips that are common place on anything associated with wheel security on most vehicles. I'm surprised about that 240 story though since the brake caliper will stop the disc travelling too far outwards. Even if the locking ring doesn't fail altogether, any movement over time will introduce extra end play and because the bearing is tapered, side play as well.
