There are a couple of ways of tackling the job but I found the easiest was to raise the top cover enough to swap the blind strip over. It won't pass right over the shifter, but it will lift up just enough to access what you need. Remember to retrieve all the broken bits.

To release the cover you have to pull it forward or push it back off the little plastic hooks. It takes quite a bit of force to free it.
