Oh yes, quite common. And also quite advanced for their day, with separate zones for driver and each passenger.
There are two basic types. The first has a latch type control lever and must house the condenser as it sometimes drips on your knee.
The second type has an infinitely variable rotational control located on the door card, just forward of the door release lever.
Most cars are fitted with them both.
