ill look again tomorrow but im pretty sure thinking about it that when i pulled on the driveshaft to get it out it did give way... would this driveshaft problem also, allow the car to be put in gear without use of clutch? (with the engine running of course)

Not likely. If you can put the car in gear without using the clutch with the engine running, it would tell me that the clutch friction plate is not properly mating with the flywheel. It could be slipping, which might explain your lack of drive.
