Put the belt back on and tried starting but it wouldn't start, it sort of tries but that's it. I am now at a loss. The crank sensor is a new one.

you have to bleed the system with a hand pump which fits in between the Inlet pipe and the fuel filter . It will not bleed itself . Have you had the fuel filter off?
