Situation has moved on a bit. The clutch is now not engaging at all. Getting no signal to the compressor so bypassed it for a short time and the clutch pulls in no problem and holds there but still no hint of cool air at the vents.
So my current guess is that I've disturbed a pipe during the alternator change and pressure has dropped right off.
Whatever it is starting to look like a trip to a local air con guy.
