#1 yes
#2 the engine :P seriously though a straight swap should do it of the engine lump as a whole, i.e. engine gear box driveshafts etc as there are a few differences. The ecu might need to be changed too. I don't know if these ones fitted in 2002 are car specific or not, hopefully someone else would be able to answer that. A T5 lump from 2000 would probably do the trick as pre '99 its a totally different engine set up electronically and mechanically. If you could find a 2000-2005 T5 that would be a good starting point.

I know money might come into the equation here but could you not trade yours in for a T5 model and save the enormous job of removing 2 engines and refitting 1? Maybe your like me though and just like a challenge!?
