That's a 4-cylinder VEA engine.

VEA = Volvo Engine Architecture.

It's the range of modular engines first introduced in 2013 and, I believe, first appearing in the S80 in 2014.

Some VEA engines of that vintage have been know to suffer from high oil consumption due to poor design of the oil control piston rings. Essentially, the drain holes in these rings get blocked and prevent excess engine oil on the cylinder walls from draining back into the sump prior to ignition, and this oil therefore gets burned along with diesel and air instead of returning to the oil sump.

This is not a direct indication of any engine wear, however.

Whether or not your car actually suffers from this will not be clear until you get a proper measure of things.

Worst examples can consume a litre of oil every 500 miles or less.

My V70 D4, which has done 160,000 miles, now consumes 0.5 litres every 1,500 miles. It's higher than it was and higher than I'd like but not frightening, either.

Let's see how your car does.
