SOLVED!!

I just wanted to update this, for the people who may google this in the future.

As it turns out, it was the processor in the cluster that was bad. Apparently it's a common issue on these cars.

Eventually the whole cluster died. Then I found a Polish guy who buys these processors from China and replaces them. Now it all works great, apart from that the temp needle now for whatever reason sits a bit too low. But I can live with that.

The guy lives north of Stockholm. I'd be happy to get you in touch with him if you need a similar fix. He also has the gear needed to copy all the data to a new unit.
