If I ever get my PV back on the road it will be APK / MOT exempt. It is all very well being exempt but I will at least for the price of an MOT test get a local garage to have another look over the car and do a decent test for the brakes...

...I can do loads of stuff at a DIY level but at present I am unable to check and measure relative braking efficiencies

As for learning about doing stuff yourself many many moons ago I took myself off to the local college for a car maintenance night class. These days they might still do them and even have a classic car related course that doesn't include finding an Obi Wan Kenobi socket...
