As for learning about doing stuff yourself many many moons ago I took myself off to the local college for a car maintenance night class. These days they might still do them and even have a classic car related course that doesn't include finding an Obi Wan Kenobi socket...

Although exempt I still have my Amazon given its annual MOT. Just passed last week with no advisories.
