Is a 165 made by putting the rear panels on a 164 or the front wings and engine etc on a 145? I assume the chassis rails would be wider in the 160s, hence the problem with swapping the powersteering box over.

I think the 140 and 160 chassis rails are the same width. But there are longer in a 164; the wheelbase is 100mm more, all of which is ahead of the bulkhead. I believe it's that which makes the angles wrong for a 164 steering box used in a 140.
Qulte few 165 conversions have been built over the years, but this seems to the only one Volvo ever did.
