In the scenario you've described, I've always found that the rear wiper activates in time with the front.
So, if the wipers have activated just before you hit reverse the rear wiper doesn't do anything, however, if the front wiper goes just after you drop the gearbox in to reverse then the rear wiper will go at the same time.
