Ordinarilly, the alarm will arm if it's armed with the bonnet closed. The alarm will sound if any doors are opened, including the bonnet. This is normal behaviour.
Here's the clever bit. If the alarm is armed while the bonnet open, the rest of the doors remain sensed, and the alarm will sound if one of them is opened, but it ignores the bonnet. This has been tested many times, for example if I'm charging the battery, or performing work on the engine and can't close the bonnet for whatever reason overnight.

How odd! What year is your phase 1, Canis? Mine's a 1998, but 1997-ish model year (love the Dutch).
As I said, mine just throws it's hands in the air and gives up if the bonnet is open. I'll go and unlock the door with the key, or even pull the locking pin up if the window is open, and all the doors unlock with a couple of wins from the indicators. And then the interior light comes on to welcome the thieves in!
