I think his point was that the charger is supposed to 'read' the battery and let him know if it is beyond recovery.
The battery will either not increase its charge, not take-on charge at the expected rate, or not hold charge. This kind of charging device is supposed to monitor the first two and flag any problems, if the first two went as planned you are left with holding charge. If the battery has taken-on charge, it will not vanish instantly, just drop over a few hours.
Thus, the charger may well be faulty or not what it says on the tin, as at least one of these parameters were seemingly 'read' or reported wrong.
Was the battery checked with a multimeter?
I would be contacting ctek with the findings, after multimeter readings, so they can advise and/or replace as necessary.
