You need to read the fault codes really. Did the autobox light start flashing after you had driven it a bit (which would potentially indicate a fault with one of the sensors either the RPM or vehicle speed).

Could be the mode selector switch in the console (try switching it several times) or the PNP switch (with ignition off run the lever rapidly through the selections several times to clean the contacts)
