My MOT slipped my mind this year and it was a couple of weeks overdue.
I was pulled by the police for an unrelated matter and they informed me that the MOT had expired.
I thanked them, carried on my way and sorted it a few days later.

Not having an MOT isn't some instant crime but you may as well have it ticked off should something untoward happen.
You don't want to be easy pickings.

I'd say you're much more likely to incur the wrath of the system if your car isn't taxed.
The system sure does love its money.
