I'd say that another factor is the kind of people and behaviour that certain marques attract.
It's a lot easier to have an excellent safety record if you have a greater proportion of drivers who are risk averse and generally avoid perilous behaviour in the first place.

The best safety is prevention and that starts with the driver.
