I agree that offset is important and you should always try and get the same offset as the original wheels as that maintains the original suspension design dimensions. However, that does not ensure a wheel will fit.
Two wheels can have exactly the same size parameters but not be compatible with each other because of the wheel design. So one wheel might have spokes that curve outwards and one may curve inwards and interfere with brakes for example.
Also, I do not agree that spacers are a cheap fix. For a proper set of good quality hub-centric spacers you would expect to pay £100 - £150, plus another say £50 for longer bolts.
The cheapo boy racer spacers peddled on ebay for a tenner should never be used as the wheel is centred only with the wheel bolts.
